Beach Diversion - Blighty

Mini Me recently made a brief trip to England where she met Toby. This being March the weather was variable.

BA lost our luggage for 9 1/2 days, so shopping became a prime focus, but we still had time for the Spring Knitting and Stitching Show at Olympia where there was a form of yarn bombing on display.

We had a lovely time meeting up with family, friends and especially our London neighbours in our new local Riverside pub, The Blue Boat.

Then off to Cambridgeshire for a short boat trip on the Great Ouse River where we fed the Queen's swans.

Next a visit to Ely Cathedral - origins in AD 672 with present building dating from 1083.

There is a wonderful labyrinth in the floor of the narthex tower, the length when walked is the height of the tower.

We climbed up 130 steep round stone steps
to see . . .
Small doorway on the cathedral roof!
. . . amazing hand-painted screens about 6 feet tall which open as windows down to the main trancept of the cathedral. Not liking heights, I couldn't look down for long, nor stay up there for much time. On the right you can see where we were - behind the screens in the round bit at the top of the picture.

In Oakham we visited Oakham Castle - only the Great Hall remains from 1180-1190. It was owned by de Ferriers and has a tradition of visiting Peers of the Realm giving a horseshoe to the Lord of the Manor.

Searching for lunch we came upon a thatcher.

And then back 'home' to a relative's fantail doves and the local Hamerton Zoo Park which has a world renown breeding progamme for endangered species.

And finally, in order to keep a thatched roof from fire, one needs a regular clean by the
